EXPERIENCE

Editor/Publisher, February 2014 to April 2015, for East Greenwich News

I established East Greenwich News to be able to provide a community hub for my town, a place where people can read about what's happening on Main Street, in town government, and at our schools, as well as regular coverage of police and fire news, and occasional features and profiles about the people who live and work here.

Local Editor, May 2011 through Jan. 2014, for East Greenwich Patch and North Kingstown Patch

Working as local editor for East Greenwich, I saw up close the power of local news. As the face of EG Patch (and, later, NK Patch), I played the role of small-town newspaper reporter and editor, even publisher to a certain extent. I covered town meetings, schools, business, police and fire, politics and wrote features about interesting local people and places. I frequently turned to video to help me tell a story more fully, for instance a meeting story where a short exchange between elected officials or a member of the public could really make a story come alive for readers. It was very satisfying to provide information relevant to the lives of community members every single day.

Freelance Reporter, May 2009 to May 2011, for My02818 then East Greenwich Patch

This was a classic community journalist job, with a camera. I learned my beat, writing both news stories and investigative pieces. It was a great way to re-enter the workforce after a several-year hiatus.

Copy Editor, March 1990 to July 1999, The Providence Journal

I worked part-time for The Providence Journal throughout the 1990s, a great opportunity for me while my children were young. I worked in the news department under tight deadlines, writing headlines and cutlines as well as consulting with reporters.

Communications Director, April 2002 through June 2003, The Rhode Island Foundation

I served as communications director during a time when that position was still part-time. I wrote, edited and oversaw production of quarterly newsletters and an award-winning annual report. The work included reporting on grant-making and interviews with both grant recipients and donors.

Freelance Writer, June 1989 to May 2009

In between jobs and child-rearing, I maintained a freelance writing career, primarily for The Providence Journal, but also for Rhode Island Monthly and The Rhode Island Foundation.

Copy Editor, variety of publications, January 1985 to April 1989

During the years I lived in New York City, I worked on staff for American Health magazine and Petroleum Intelligence Weekly, a newsletter. I also worked freelance for the magazines Conde Nast Traveler and Food & Wine.
